Yamaha Outboard Motors are like loyal companions on the water, accompanying us across lakes, rivers, and oceans. When winter arrives, and we no longer need to go out to sea, our 40HP Yamaha Outboard Motors also need a comfortable hibernation. Improper winter maintenance might cause them to break down the following spring. So, how should we perform winter maintenance on our outboard engines?

The correct winter maintenance methods for outboard boat motors are as follows:
① Thorough Rinsing, Cleaning, And Inspection:
After the last voyage, we need to give our marine motors a thorough freshwater rinse:
• Lower the marine engines to a vertical position and connect the rinse port using a hose.
• Rinse carefully, paying special attention to crevices where dirt and grime can easily accumulate. Clean these crevices thoroughly.
• When you see clear water flowing from the drain hole, it means the rinse is complete.
Remember: When rinsing, use a gentle water flow; avoid using a high-pressure water gun to spray directly onto sealed areas.
② Add A Dedicated Fuel Stabilizer:
The fuel system is the engine's circulatory system; never let the "blood" clot. The correct procedure is to add fuel stabilizer to the fuel tank according to the ratio in the owner's manual and start the engine. Wait 15 minutes to ensure the stabilizer circulates in every part of the engine.
③ Change The Engine Oil:
It's time to change the engine oil. Start the engine and let it reach operating temperature, then turn it off. Place an oil drain pan under the engine and loosen the drain plug. Once you see the dark, old oil flowing out, add new engine oil. Don't forget the gear oil either.
Note: If the gearbox fluid is milky white, it indicates water contamination, and the gear oil must be changed immediately. Healthy gear oil should be clear and transparent like amber.
④ Perform Antifreeze Protection:
Spark plugs are the engine's lungs and require special care in winter:
• Remove the spark plugs and spray rust inhibitor into each cylinder.
• Slowly pull the starter cord several times, like giving the engine a deep breath.
• Before reinstalling the spark plugs, apply a small amount of anti-seize compound to the threads of the new spark plugs.
⑤ Lubrication:
Know that all moving joints of the boat engine require lubrication:
• Apply special grease to the steering shaft.
• Apply a thin layer to the throttle and gearshift linkage.
• Remove the propeller, clean it, apply rust inhibitor to the shaft, and then reinstall it.
⑥ Protection:
• Spray all metal parts with rust inhibitor spray.
• Cover with the special outboard motor cover.
• Store it upright or laid flat according to the manual's angle.
Important Reminder: Never wrap it directly with plastic sheeting! This will trap moisture, causing rust and damaging the outboard motor.
Spend an afternoon carefully taking care of your Yamaha outboard motor. This meticulous care will ensure worry-free sailing throughout the year. Remember, every careful maintenance is an investment in your next successful adventure.
