As the wind on the lake begins to carry a biting chill, the last ripple fades into stillness, and the last catch of your fishing trip becomes a memory, it's time to maintain your Yamaha Outboard Motor 40HP Yamaha Outboard Motor. Don't think that simply removing the key is enough. True care lies in meticulous and gentle maintenance steps.

Why Can't You Just Remove The Key?

If there are still water droplets inside your outboard motor, in sub-zero temperatures, these droplets will expand, like tiny ice crystal daggers, aiming at the oil passages, cooling pipes, and even the cylinder block. Aged fuel is quietly turning into viscous honey, clogging the nozzles. Therefore, proper maintenance of the outboard engine is essential.

How To Properly Maintain Your Outboard Boat Motor?

① Wash away the dust of the season with a freshwater bath:

Just like we take a shower when we come home from a trip, the boat engine needs the same. Gently rinse it with a gentle stream of water from bottom to top, focusing on cleaning the water inlet and propeller. Remember: salt is the invisible enemy of metal, and not a drop can be left behind. After rinsing, gently dry with a soft cloth, making sure to clean every screw.

② Properly maintain the fuel system:

You can add fuel stabilizer according to the instructions, or you can shut off the fuel line until the last drop of fuel is used. Choose according to your specific needs.

③ Change the engine oil:

Always change the engine oil while the engine is still warm. When changing the oil, observe the condition of the old oil flowing out. If it is cloudy, it may contain water; if it has a metallic sheen, it may indicate internal wear. Don't forget to change the gear oil, and don't forget to check the drain hole under the propeller shaft.

④ Spray with a special rust inhibitor:

Remove the spark plugs and inject a special rust inhibitor into each cylinder. Then gently pull the starter cord three to four times to spread the protective oil evenly on the cylinder walls, forming a transparent armor.

⑤ Lubricate the joints:

All moving joints need care. The throttle and shift lever, tilt shaft, and steering shaft all require lubrication. Don't forget to remove the propeller and apply a thin protective layer to the shaft. Keeping the joints flexible will ensurean  agile response in the spring.

⑥ Remove the battery:

Disconnect the negative terminal of the battery; this is its safety switch. Store the battery on a dry wooden rack, away from the cold of the concrete floor. Charge it monthly, keeping it above 50% charge.

⑦ Choose a suitable storage location:

Ideally, the marine motor should be hung vertically in a dry, well-ventilated area. If you insist on leaving your marine engine on the boat, be sure to cover it with a professional, breathable engine cover. Ordinary waterproof tarpaulins will trap sweat and accelerate corrosion.

A few common mistakes to be aware of:

• A heated garage is also not recommended: Condensation from temperature fluctuations is more dangerous than direct exposure.

• Covering it with multiple layers of canvas is also not recommended: Engines need to breathe; breathable materials are essential.

• It's not okay to leave the engine oil unchanged: The acidic substances and metal shavings in old oil will slowly corrode delicate components in winter.

If your outboard motor is a two-stroke, be sure to completely drain the fuel system and pay attention to spark plug maintenance. If your boat motor is a four-stroke, you need to check the oil pan and clean it.

The following spring, be sure to connect a fully charged battery and check that the coolant inlet is clear and all connections are secure. Connect fresh fuel, open the fuel line valve, and gently press the fuel filler bulb until it hardens. Then, gently ignite the engine and set off.

Remember, every wave is worth waiting for, every engine deserves to be loved, and every spring will arrive on time. The lake is there, the boat is waiting, waiting for proper maintenance and a fresh start next spring. For more information about Yamaha 4 Stroke 150 HP Boat Motor, please contact us:
